Week 6: Killshot

Killshot  (Originally Aired October 20, 2009)

This weeks episode has Director Vance and Abby from NCIS in it.

Bathing suit clad beach lovers are video recording the fun when an out of control jet ski spoils the day.  The man slumped over the jet ski crashes and is flung up onto the beach .  Some good Samaritans rush to his aide, turn him over to do CPR, open his life vest, and discover that he has been shot in the chest.

Callen is still looking for a place to live and Sam suggests that he could live on a boat.  Nate’s office is being worked on so he’s hanging out reading a graphic novel.  Dom is trying to video Nate without him knowing (but he does).  Dom is now a fully qualified NCIS agent and is told that there are still some things that he needs to learn on the job.  Dom asks what happened to the person before him and they tell him that they had a problem with the weather.  Sam suggests Nate ask Hetty when his office will be done, and Nate’s reply is “you’re armed, you ask her.”

They get called up to the ops room.  Hetty tells them about Daniel Su, owner of SuSal, who got a contract from DARPA two weeks ago.  He is an electronic engineer who left North Korea five years ago. Secnav wants to know who killed him and why.  They are afraid that it could be the North Koreans.  

The team gets to work looking into the life of Daniel Su.  Daniel was working on a lightweight squad-based communication system for the Marine Corps. More importantly, he kept a regular schedule.  Every Monday, Thursday, and Saturday morning he rented a jet ski and the person who killed him knew it.  

Hetty asks Nate how Dom is doing.  Nate tells her that Dom is anxious to prove himself.  They both agree that it would be best if Dom not know that the three people before him did not make the cut.  Sam and Callen go to Daniel’s house.  Front door is unlocked, back is not, and blood everywhere. They find the body of a dead woman in the house.

Sally Morris is the money person for Daniel Su’s company.  The autopsy report says that Daniel was shot by a person who was shooting from above.  Sam and Callen go to the scene and ask Eric to pull up the camera footage at the marina (while also talking about Callen living in an RV park or on a boat). When they get back, they look at the footage and see a man with a hat who leaves within three minutes of the shooting.  They see that the person getting into the car is not a man but a woman. Director Vance walks in and tells them that the woman’s name is Lee Wuan Kai... adding that they are in a whole pile of trouble.

Kai is North Korean and flew into LA on a fake passport a week ago.  She is an assassin in exile based in Eastern Europe.  He tells them that she is not to be underestimated.  Callen and Sam are both wondering if Kai and Vance have met before and if this case is personal.

Vance talks to Hetty who already knows that it is Kai.  Vance met her in Prague in 1984, Tokyo seven years later, then Sierra Leone, Paris, and New York City.  Left a body count each time.  He should have been killed in Prague but he got lucky.  Crime scene analysis won’t be ready until the next day so Vance calls up Abby to see what she can find.

Sam and Callen met Frank Davis from DARPA over at the boathouse.  Davis seems a little jumpy and doesn’t want to be recorded.  Says that Daniel was very secretive and there were certain things that he didn’t want anyone to know, but under the terms of the DARPA contract that was going to change. As far as he was concerned Daniel’s technology died with him.  There is something about him that Callen does not trust.  

Callen and Sam go to see Daniel’s brother Jimmy. When they pull up to the apartment complex they see Jimmy and his wife leaving.  As Callen and Sam approach they see the reflection from Kai’s gun scope.  They get everyone into cover behind a van.

Kai escapes and even took the shell casings with her.  Jimmy told them that Daniel didn’t talk about his work and he would not relocate or change his name.  Eric calls Callen and tells him to meet Director Vance at the hotel where Kai is staying at. Kensi and Nate stay at the boathouse.  Kensi says that Jimmy and his wife are playing “married couple,” which meaning fighting.  Kensi can read lips and tells Nate that Jimmy knows more about what his brother did than he is telling them.  

Vance is in Kai’s room and sees pictures of Daniel.  The phone rings in the room and Kai is on the phone when Vance answers.  Vance calls Callen on his cell phone and Eric traces it to the seventh floor.  When Sam and Callen get to the seventh floor, they find Kai’s phone on the floor.  She called Vance to tell them that she was not the one who killed Sally Morris.

Dom checked on Daniel’s security system at the house, and accessed the motion detector records.  From the records they deduce that Sally Morris knew the person who killed her.  They look at the phone records from the past 24 hours.  There are a lot of calls between Daniel, his brother, and Frank Davis (the DARPA guy).  But his brother and Frank had been talking frequently also.  They need someone who has not met Jimmy to confront him about Daniel's business and if he killed Sally.  

Dom is posing as an officer that was on the scene at the house.  He is VERY nervous  Callen assures him that he will be fine.  Dom meets with Jimmy and tells him that he was the first officer on the scene and before she died Sally said a name and it was his.  Eric put an alert on Jimmy’s phone so they would know if someone was trying to trace his location.  The alert went off with a strong signal strength.  Vance tells them to abort the mission. Kai shoots at Jimmy and Dom gets Jimmy out of range.  Kai is at a parking garage and Sam goes after her.  Kai gets in the car and tries to escape while Sam shoots at the car several times.  Her car comes out of the garage and hits a truck going in. Callen and Sam find the car empty, but with the seat covered in blood.

Vance gets a call telling him that Jimmy denies killing Sally.  Abby calls and tells Vance that on some of the spatter there is an outline of the killers hand but there are two marks  They call Kensi who is with Jimmy’s wife at the boathouse.  Kensi tells her that they found a bloody hand print and the killer had two rings on her wedding finger.  Sally knew her killer.  Aimee tells Kensi  that Jimmy was the smart one, not Daniel, and only the three of them knew.  When Frank started wondering if he was dealing with the wrong brother he started making a lot of calls to Jimmy, because he wanted to know the truth. Jimmy didn’t care about the money, he just wanted to help his brother.  

Aimee was there with Sally got the call about Daniel and Aimee told her the truth.  Sally was mad that Daniel and Jimmy lied to her. She was going to call and have Jimmy sent back to North Korea.  Aimee confesses that she killed Sally.

Vance arrives at the scene.  Sam tells him that she bailed at the top of the ramp.  Vance tells Dom he did a good job.  Nate says that Vance doesn’t believe that she is dead, and that she will haunt him forever. Dom realizes that he lost the camera button, and all four of them start frantically looking for the button.  “Hetty’s going to kill me.”

This was the second episode of the series to be filmed and was planned to air as such until early buzz about the appearance of Pauley Perrette and rumors of a story arc involving suspicious dealing about Leon Vance prompted postponement while more viewers caught onto the show.

Week 5: Search and Destroy

Search and Destroy (Originally Aired October 13, 2009)



Walton Flynn former Marine arrives at LAX from and realizes he is being followed.  After being chased by the three men, hijacking a car and killing one of the men by hitting him with a car he escapes.


Eric is excited that he now has over one thousand Facebook friends. Hetty is upset that Callen got blood on a white shirt, his color scheme is now black.  Vance breifs them on Walton Flynn. Flynn works for Citdential security, one of the largest private security firms contracted by the US government in Iraq. Ten days ago he shot an Iraqi businessman that he was supposed to be protecting. He went into hiding. Citdential found out that he was on his way to LA. Tried to take him at the airport this morning. They made a mess and one of the men ended up dead and the DOD wants them to take care of this.

Sam and Callen talk to Peter Caldwell who recruited Flynn once he made CEO.  Three months ago he started "Behavoir Problems" trigger happy and drinking. Jim Rivers tells him that he just snapped.  Caldwell offers to help them find him, but Callen tells them no.  Nate gives them Flynn's history: Broken home. Dad busted in a drug conspiracy when Flynn turned seven. Mom was a drunk. String of foster homes, A few trips to juvi. He signed up for the marines the day he turned 18. The military gave him the family and structure that he had never had. The only other choice would've been a gang.  When asked why he chose the Military over a gang Callen tells them that it's a chance to get away from it all.  That gangs do give you structure but they keep you in the same place.  The military is all about starting over.  They watched the footage, and  after the gunman was killed Flynn went back to the terminal to get picked up by someone in a jeep. Nate tells Sam and Callen that he got the psych profile from the Citdental and thinks that he had undiagnosed PTSD complicated by his upbringing.  But what he didn't get was if he had a psychotic break in Iraq he was lucid enough to fly to LA when he could have gotten off in the East coast, so he was in LA for a reason.

Eric shows Callen and Sam video of the Jeep and the only thing they can see on the person who picks him up is a tattooed arm. Sam recognizes the type of tattoo and they go over to a local tattoo parlor. The woman says that it is her work and told her the person paid in cash and her name is Cherry. Eric found a major link for Flynn to go to LA. Flynn's former foster brother who owns a gun shop in the Valley named Chad Ellis. Kensi and Dom go over to the gun shop and find the shop closed and the doors unlocked. They find Chad tortured and dead.

Eric has found out that Cherise Dawson is the owner of the jeep.  He also found out that Cherise and Flynn had gone to the same high school and are now friends on Facebook. A week ago he contacted her and tells her that he's going to be in LA. He wants to meet up with her in person. Callen thinks that he is using her for money or a place to crash. Kensi finds out from the coroner that Chad Ellis was beaten to death and two guns were stolen. She asks why he just didn't take the guns and go. Why torture him? It doesn't make sense. Sam and Callen go to Cherise's house while she's not a home.  They make sure she has not had the same fate as Chad Ellis, then put video and mike her place. Kensi goes over to Cherise's work posing as a friend from high school. She mentions Flynn's name and Cherise makes an excuse about being late for work and leaves.  

Sam and Callen are now on a "wait and watch" patrol which just means that Callen is going to get on Sam's nerves until Sam basically threatens him with bodily harm (AKA "Old Married Couple" mode). The next day rolls around and still no sign of Flynn. Sam, Callen, Kensi and Dom all decide that it's now time to go to her office to see if they can get anything. Dom mentions that in Nate's profile of Cherise that she likes bad boys who need saving.


Callen goes in as a game tester.  Tells the owner that if he doesn't get the job he would make a couple of phone calls about his tax return.  When he starts the job he contacts Eric to help him out because he has no idea what he is doing.  They go to plan B which is Eric turning off the electricity for the entire building and every gets to go home. Sam messes with her car and Callen helps her out.  Offers to drive her home and fix the car the next day.  He goes inside and Flynn comes by.  Callen mentions rough home life as a child and they connect.  The security guys go in to get Flynn.  Shots are fired and he flees the scene.


Cherise tells Callen that Flynn probably went to see her because he needed a sim card downloaded. She said that the card was damaged and she couldn't get it to work. Flynn calls her up and tells her to put Callen on the phone. Tells him that he was being set up. Callen gives Eric the sim card to decode it. Eric finds out that it is a video file from Flynn's rifle while in Iraq. Sam and Callen find Flynn who has a gun pointed at Caldwell. Eric puts the video on a screen across the street. It shows that the real killer of the Iraqi businessman was not Flynn but Peter Caldwell.


Callen takes Flynn to the people who are going to give him a new idenity. They talk about doing the job to keep people safe. Callen knows that Flynn would be safer on his own, pulls the car over and lets him go.

Week 4: Predator

Predator (Originally aired October 6, 2009)


A live missile training exercise goes wrong when the drone doesn’t fire at the target but veers off and kills a soldier on the ground.

Kensi comes into work and Sam asks about date number two.  She tells him that it didn’t happen because she canceled.  Says she’s great on the first date but the second date she gets bored and uninterested, so the first date is the last date.  Hetty tells Kensi that George Hamilton told her once that “what men really love is a woman who plays hard to get “ then she stops to think and adds “or was it Sinatra.” 

Eric shows them footage of the training exercise that happened twenty-four hours before.  Marine Mike Haslett was killed when the drone controlled by Airman Mark Briggs fired the live missile and now is missing. Now they have to find out where it is and if it was pilot error, system malfunction or sabotage.  Sam and Callen both know that with the drone missing that they have to find it fast but since it’s a joint training with the Marines and Air Force there is going to be a lot of paperwork and they don’t have time.  So they go to Hetty who knows people who might be able to help out.  

Hetty's contact is in the CIA, NSA, DOD, and rumored to be Black Ops for all three. He tells them the conversation never happened and they have sixty seconds.  They ask how secure are the UAVs. He tells them that the drones have been hacked four times in the past month but this is the first time they disappeared and not crashed. Before he leaves he tells them to tell Hetty that he had not forgotten about Nepal and as far as he was concerned they were even. 

A copy of the drone footage came up on the Internet and they see that the drone had landed in the desert with a semi-truck in the background and an unknown man. To get the footage off the web Eric crashes the Internet angering Hetty who was watching cats on a trampoline. Sam and Callen leave to go to the boat-shed (and rat Eric out to Hetty as they go).  

Briggs tells them that he didn’t misfire and a hacker got in the system.  The system is flawed and they knew it. Drones can get hacked fighter pilots can’t. Nate tells them that he doesn’t think that Briggs is their guy. Eric contacts them and lets them know that the hacker who put the footage up is at a day long class for computer science.  The guest speaker has only been seen by the FBI so they can improvise. He also says the man in the drone footage is Yousef Kaleem.  Sam and Callen go to Kaleem’s apartment to talk to him.  Kaleem comes home and shoots at them.  Sam chases him and shoots him twice just after Kaleem triggers a bomb in his bag.

Sam and Callen go back and the others know that Kaleem is dead.  They now have to focus on the hacker who posted the footage on the web.  Kensi is now posing as the Razor Mantis, a hacker, who was arrested by the FBI for stealing files from the department of defense and cut a deal in exchange for jail time she now has to teach class about cyber crime.  Dom checked out Kaleem’s house and found weapons.  Nate says that he is more of a follower than a leader and used to work for Aconcept Solutions that is owned by Author Jansen.  

While Kensi is doing her lecture Eric is helping her make the students believe that she is the real deal and scanning their computers at the same time.  Eric finds out that Joel Hardy had been spending a lot of money on trips and computer equipment the last couple of days.  Kensi takes a call and follows Joel.  Callen and Sam talk to Auther Janson.  They inform him that Kaleem is dead.  Janson tells them that he doesn’t want to know anything personal about his employees.  He hired him because of his computer skills, but he adds that Kaleem had recently been making anti-American remarks.

Kensi meets Joel at a bar for a drink and Dom is there for back up.  Joel goes to the bathroom and Dom follows him.  Someone distracts Dom and when he gets to the bathroom he finds Joel dead in one of the stalls.  They look at the security footage that Eric pulled from the bar.  They see a man walk right out of the area just after Dom walked in.  Nate tells him that it is not his fault.

The next day Sam comes in after looking at Joel Hardy’s apartment with a joystick that they think can control the drone.  Eric hacks into Joel’s computer and finds software that could allow them to hack a drone.  He sent it to AJSolutions.  The man who killed Joel is the Hamzi Khan.  His wife Rebecca was killed in a UAV attack at a school  She is also the sister of Arthur Janson and now they want revenge.

Eric alerts them that the truck that has the drone is on the move.  Sam and Callen get the driver out and find the truck empty.  The driver tells them that he was paid to drive the truck to the port by Author Janson.  Eric calls them and tells them that the drone is now airborne flying around LA. Nate and Dom talk Briggs into helping them out.  Dom is the one who gets through to Briggs to help them. Callen finds the boat that Janson is on (named Rebecca).  The drone is targeting a high school, so Eric trips the fire alarms to get everyone out. Callen finds Janson and shoots him in the arm but Janson is still able to fire the missile. Unable to hack the drone Dom suggests hacking the missle which does work and crashes into the ocean.
